Making HER-STORY NOW:

Commander

Weslyne Louis Francois

Meet the new Commander in the Grove that is continuing a winning streak for the Miami Dade Police Department-

A descendant of Haitian parents, born in Nassau, Bahamas, my family migrated from the Bahamas to Miami in the late 90's. I was raised in a middle-class family with two other siblings while attending school in Miami-Dade County. In 2005, I separated from the military and sought employment with the City of Miami Police Department, as a civilian in the Records Unit. Shortly after reacclimatizing to the law enforcement environment, I realized I wasn’t ready to give it up. I entered the Police Academy in 2006 and later became a sworn police officer. In 2009, I welcomed a beautiful baby girl Me’A Ariella, and had a new mission in life. Balancing both motherhood and my career has been quite a journey, but I learned many of lessons. Most importantly, I placed the well-being of my child first over my career especially, as a single mother. Rather than seeking career opportunities, I felt it was best I focus my attention on my child’s early developmental years.  During this time, I also found a love for community policing. From 2009 through 2015, I was assigned as the Neighborhood Resource Officer for the Little Haiti NET Area. During my tenure there, I realized that there was so much work to be done. I quickly implemented and assisted in implementing various programs/events that brought much needed resources to the community. I have worked closely with many faith-based organizations, organizations that bring awareness to the drug epidemic, Citizens on Patrol, mentoring, counseling, social services, as well as those raising cultural awareness. In 2015, I was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant and was reassigned back to Patrol. While on Patrol, I was selected to supervise and lead the Overtown Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA) Team. In that capacity, I was able to continue doing what I loved the most, which was engaging with the community, while applying necessary proactive measures. I mimicked the same principles from my time in Little Haiti to the Overtown Community. In 2017, I was extremely blessed to not only be promoted to Police Lieutenant, but also be assigned as the Commanding Officer of the Assaults Investigative Unit. In my current position, I oversea two teams of Sergeants and Detectives that investigate felonious Assault and Battery cases. We work closely with the State Attorney’s Office to ensure successful prosecution of violent offenders. In February of 2020, I was promoted to the rank of Police Commander and assigned to the Coconut Grove Net area. I am currently married with three beautiful children. I plan on continuing to excel through ranks while continuing to make a positive impact in the community
